WHat is S-100 ?
What is s-100?
S-100 is the universal hydrographic data model for the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO). This represents an entirely new set of standards for describing, storing, managing, and sharing hydrographic data electronically. It replaces the old S-57 electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) data format with a new "machine-readable" format to improve sharing and interoperability across different organisations and systems.
A key benefit of S-100 is its ability to work with virtually all types of digital hydrographic-related data. It is also compatible with international geospatial standards (the iso 19000 series), which allows for much simpler inclusion of maritime data into global navigation systems.
How does this all work in practice? :This change from S-57 to S-100 does not represent merely a change in the way you view electronic charts. Instead, it represents a complete change in the depth and detail of your surroundings you can view; thus, fundamentally changing the types of decisions you can make while at sea.
With S-100, this limitation is eliminated when you can layer many additional data sources (in addition to the ENC data source, S-101) that update concurrently on a single ECDIS display. Importantly, these additional data sources can be used interchangeably and independently with other data sources displayed concurrently within the same ECDIS display.

Where the Industry Stands Now: The timeline for the Industry has been set and is in place. The date for legal recognition of S-100 enabled ECDIS for use under the IMO’s revised performance standard for ECDIS (MSC 530(106)) has been set at 1 January 2026.
The actual transitional time frame however is 2029. All new ECDIS installations, whether they be original or retrofit, will need to be able to support S-100 data starting in 2029.

Current S-57 enc support will continue during the transition phase and provide an acceptable two-standard transition period for users. The first phase of the IHO’s S-100 deployment plan was completed in August 2025 with the release of operational versions of S-124 Navigational Warnings and S-128 catalogue of nautical products.
Phase 2 is focused on route planning standards. Sea trials have started, using live systems, being performed by both the U.K. and French hydrographic offices.
For example, using s-100 enabled ECDIS, a navigator would be able to superimpose (or "overlay") an enc data source (s-101) onto a real-time bathymetry surface data source (S-102), tidal and water level data source (s-104), surface current data source (S-111) and dynamic under-keel clearance calculation data source (S-129); all concurrently in the same ECDIS display.
In practice, this results in a far greater similarity to a 3D views of a marine environment in near real-time then what is currently possible with existing standards.
For bulk carriers navigating confined Australian ports, narrow and shallow approach channels in Australia or congested GBR corridors, this represents an important change.
